Workbench selected as Architect for City of Seaside’s Prototype Accessory Dwelling Unit Program

Santa Cruz, CA - Local design-build firm Workbench is pleased to announce the firm’s selection as the Architect for the City of Seaside’s new Prototype Accessory Dwelling Unit Program.

This visionary initiative will offer residents a side-by-side comparison of two new Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) built on city-owned residential properties. Once the project is complete, the City of Seaside intends to make the Workbench-designed plans available, free of charge, to any Seaside homeowner for their use.

Workbench will be providing the architectural design of one site-built “prototype” ADU, located on a city-owned “demonstration site”. Workbench will also facilitate the development of a second pre-fab or modular ADU to be installed on the neighboring demonstration site.
In addition to the two ADUs, the project includes the renovation of two existing single-family homes located on the side-by-side sites.

Following construction, both ADUs will be opened to the public, allowing residents to compare the two projects and delivery methods. The project costs and timelines will be tracked for each ADU in order to provide the community with a real-life comparison of the two building methods. Following the open-house period, the four units of low-income housing will be rented to community members.

“We are excited to help the residents of Seaside more easily and cost effectively add ADUs to their properties. We commend the City and its leaders for their foresight and pro-active approach to solving California’s housing crisis” says Jamileh Cannon, founder of Workbench.

The City of Seaside has recently worked to make ADUs more feasible and less expensive for their citizens by actions including waiving ADU building permit fees. The introduction of this new program will further establish the City as a leader in the ADU and affordable housing movements. Workbench is proud to be their partner for this visionary and community-driven project.

The project will commence immediately (February 2020).
