Jess Vanni

Job Captain

Bringing a passion for sustainable design and attention to detail, Jess serves as Job Captain on Workbench projects, coordinating technical drawings and supporting communication between design and construction teams. With a natural talent for problem-solving and an eye for both aesthetic and functional design, she helps transform architectural visions into buildable realities.

Originally from Kīhei, Hawaiʻi, Jess brings a deep appreciation for community and place to every project. Her commitment to sustainability extends beyond work—you'll find her biking to the office, volunteering at Idea Fab Labs, or advocating for accessible public spaces and slow fashion. An avid reader with a goal of 40 books this year, Jess approaches each project with the same curiosity and dedication she brings to her hobbies.

On Sustainable Design

I'm passionate about creating spaces that respect both people and the planet. From material selection to transportation planning, every design decision is an opportunity to build more thoughtfully. My experiences abroad—from studying in Copenhagen to building with bamboo in Ecuador—reinforced my belief that sustainable design isn't just about environmental impact; it's about creating spaces that foster genuine community connection.

Why I Love Santa Cruz

I love to travel, and stoked to explore Santa Cruz. The combination of incredible natural beauty, progressive environmental values, and vibrant creative community makes this place special. Plus, having surfing and climbing spots minutes away doesn't hurt!

Outside of Workbench

When I'm not at the office, you'll find me creating, climbing, surfing, or experimenting in the kitchen with a new tiramisu recipe or batch of butter mochi. My two cats, Lani and Roo, keep me while reading and watercoloring, and I'm always planning the next adventure—this year's goal is to finally explore more of our incredible national parks.
